Traders and investors in the Indian equity and commodity markets should note an upcoming trading holiday. On Friday, May 1, 2026, both the Bombay Stock Exchange [BSE] and the National Stock Exchange [NSE] will remain fully closed for trading in observance of Maharashtra Day. This closure means no transactions will take place in equities, equity derivatives, or currency derivatives segments.

The commodity markets will also see adjusted timings. The Multi Commodity Exchange [MCX] will operate under a partial closure, remaining open for the evening session (5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM) but closed for the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Conversely, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange [NCDEX] will observe a full trading holiday, mirroring the equity exchanges.

Maharashtra Day is an annual state public holiday commemorating the formation of Maharashtra state on May 1, 1960. As it falls on a Friday in 2026, it will result in a long weekend for market participants.

This May 1st holiday is one of the 16 declared market holidays for the year 2026. Following this closure, market participants can expect eight more trading holidays throughout the remainder of 2026, underscoring the importance of keeping track of the official holiday calendar to plan trading and investment strategies effectively.

Investors are advised to factor in this non-trading day when planning their portfolio adjustments, settlement cycles, and any short-term trading strategies to avoid liquidity issues or missed opportunities due to the market closure. Always refer to the official exchange websites for the most accurate and up-to-date holiday schedules.
